The Russell Fork through the Breaks Gorge
Mountain Art Works (MAW's) is dedicated to the culture and history of
Appalachia in and around Southwest Virginia, in the Heart of the Appalachian
Mountains.  The people are much like the mountains themselves, rough around
the edges, hardened by the years of life here. They tend to be clannish and
protective of what is theirs, much like the mountains that have protected them
and helped to maintain a way of life that has vanished elsewhere, reflecting our
European and Native American roots.

A  tribute to
Lillie Walcie Coleman (MAW) who lived her 104 years here in the
mountains of Virginia, USA.  She was a wise woman.  She taught us to use the
resources that we have available in the great outdoors, to live off the land.

Mountain Art Works originated to help bring awareness to our region through
tourism and marketing works of art from the mountains, the music, people, food
and crafts.  We are located on The Crooked Road, Virginia's Heritage Music
Trail, The TransAmerica (Bike)Trail.
To our family and friends, brothers and sisters,
cousins, associates and other acquaintances
from around the globe and beyond...

We wish you peace
and great happiness

We are living during the most challenging
But glorious times known to mankind

We inherit not the earth from our ancestors...
But borrow her from our children

Seek wisdom and truth
As you travel life's journeys

Realize the truths we've known till today
Will not be the truths
we come to know

Don't carry the world's problems on your back
But do your part to fix them

When the answer to your questions
Doesn't come in the outside world
Go within

Follow your heart
and your dreams

And Always Remember
Your Road Home.

                              MAW

The rugged mountain terrain protects our residents from the outside
world and restricts access into the region except for folks willing to
navigate our winding curvy roads.  Boy, do we have the curves! The
lack of major highways (no four lane highways) into the area helps
preserve the way of live that our forefathers knew and loved.

Plans are currently underway to develop the Coalfield Expressway
which will ease access into the region.  But, this will take some time.
Don't let this be a deterrent to keep you from experiencing our natural
scenic beauty here in the
Heart of Appalachia.
Natural Gas production and the coal industry are predominate
throughout Appalachia.  It is a part of our history.  Coal companies
can remove an entire mountaintop to access a small seam of coal
that lies underneath.
