Buchanan and Dickenson County's oldest resident -- Our Maw...

Lillie Walcie Boyd Coleman was born August 20, 1899,one of 13 children of Columbus and Mary Bowman Boyd. She began her life in Buchanan County and later moved to Dickenson County, where she resides today with her daughter and son-in-law.

In 1917, she married Henry Harlis Coleman. She bore 13 children, and also raised as many as 40 foster children, many of whom still refer affectionately to her as "Mom" or "Mamaw".

Walcie kept watch over the house and would take the children to the fields where they raised their basic food supplies, as well as tobacco. The fields were plowed by hand, using mules.

3 Generations Jane, Maw (Walcie) and Allene VanDykeMost of Walcie's life has been spent in Dickenson County. She remembers seeing the first car go down the road, and speaks of hunting ginseng throughout the hills of the area. We consider ourselves lucky to be blessed with her presence, at 104 years of age.
