Less than a mile from MAW's is the Russell Fork River which joins the Big Sandy River in Kentucky before flowing into the Ohio and finally the Mississippi. On the way it passes through nearby Breaks Gorge, sometimes referred to as the "Grand Canyon of the Southeast."
Throughout the month of October, water is released into the Gorge through the dam at John Flannagan Reservoir and the river is raised to improve rafting conditions. As a result the sometimes catagory 5+ river has become nationally-known for whitewater rafting and kayaking.

The river offers many forms of recreation. Anglers have the opportunity to pursue channel and flathead catfish (recent reports also indicate a growing population of blue catfish, though we have yet to see one), rainbow trout, and smallmouth bass. If you're in the area from out of town and you'd like to try your luck against some of the area's toughest game fish, we'll find you a local angler (usually Scott) who can get you to the fish and show you what they're biting.
