Paw's Formulas (Paw makes no guarantees and expects you to use your own better judgement when thinkin' to apply his methods.)

  • Gasoline Anti-Knock: A little spray of water carburated into intake manifold of an internal combustion engine will dampen the "ping" nearly as well as tetra-ethyl lead ("ethyl").
  • Non-Rust Anti-Freeze: Old motor oil thinned with kerosene.
  • Burn Out Carbon in a Motor: Disconnect windshield wiper tube from intake manifold. Substitute another tube leading to a container of hydrogen peroxide. Allow this to be drawn into idling motor. Excess oxygen will burn out the carbon deposits.
  • Break a dog from chasing cars: Attach a stick to the dog's collar to strike at his knees when he runs.
  • Develop Fingerprints: Place a small wad of cotton, saturated with tincture of iodine, in a glass tube; blow against suspected fingerprints, and they will appear.
  • Keep Grass from Growing Near Walks: Saturate the grass to be removed with used motor oil. (Only a fool would use new.)
  • Make Steel and Iron Tools Rust Proof: Boil in a solution of ferric phosphate or (better) benzoate of soda.
  • Nickel Plate Metal: Equal pars of double nickel salts and sal ammoniac dissolved in water. Heat to near boiling and immerse the metal to be nickeled, with a scrap of aluminum or aluminum foil touching it. Rinse well in clear water.
  • Make Mimeograph Ink: Thin common printers ink with kerosene to desired consistency.
  • Liquid Fire Coloring: To make a "dip" or "spray" for fireplace logs, add the following to 1 gallon of methanol (denatured alcohol)
    RED: 1/4 tsp. strontium nitrate.
    GREEN: barium nitrate.
    YELLOW: common table salt.
    BLUE: copper sulfate (blue vitriol).
    PURPLE: copper sulfide.
  • Mosquito Bite Protection: Four pars glycerine, 4 parts alcohol, 1 part eucalyptus oil. Or make a solution of equal parts of isopropyl alcohol and methyl phthalate.
  • Another Mosquito Remedy: Mix oil of citronella with common vaseline and apply to exposed areas.
  • Green Lawn All Winter Long: In the autumn, scatter Italian rye grass on lawn.
  • Make Stagnant Water Safe to Drink: To a quart of water add about 10 drops tincture of iodine. Let Stand.
  • Keep Fleas Off Dogs: Sprinkle dog with sage.
  • Open Most Sinks and Drains: Pour in a little kerosene. Let stand overnight. Results not immediate. Never figured what it does to the pipes, but they're still runnin.
  • Transparent Paint for Glass: Mix water colors with sodium silicate solution.
  • Insect and Roach Exterminator: Mix well, one pound Borax, 60 oz. powdered sugar, 1 oz. cocoa powder and 2 oz. sodium floride. Sprinkle around places pests are known to frequent and, for heavens sake, keep out of the reach of children. It'll kill them too.
