Dickenson County is home to the Ralph Stanley Museum.

Dr. Ralph Stanley, a native son from these hills of home, is one of the most respected and recognized names in Bluegrass music
today.  Ralph and his brother Carter Stanley shared their distinct style from their early teen age years until Carter's death in 1966.

Ralph continued performing and held true to his deep values of tradition.  Learning his banjo playing skills from his mother, he has
carried the Stanley Sound from Dickenson County, to Carnegie Hall and to Hollywood movie shows.
Mountain Music

The Crooked Road, Virginia's Heritage Music Trail winds across Virginia through small towns, over mountains and into the heartland
of mountain music. Virginia's Heritage Music Trail runs from Franklin County westward into The Heart of Appalachia ending in
Dickenson County.

The music here can be haunting, soul wrenching and unforgettable with deep roots in the churches of the area.    Many
congregations still today practice the traditional art of Psalm singing or "lining out" the words of the song by the minister or lead
singer then repeated by others to complete verse after verse.
Mountain Art Works is located in Haysi.  A little town know over the years as a draw for good music and fun.  MAW's is located in a
building that has been a gathering place for old friends and new since 1937.  (The notorious "Club 83")  Small bands of friends and
local musicians would frequently come out.

Most of our gatherings are small, just a friend or relative or two stopping by.  But, You never know who will stop in.  Musicians are
encouraged to bring their instruments for some picking fun and fellowship and the public is invited to enjoy blends of bluegrass and
gospel music.

What an opportune time to get to know folks that grew up around mountain music and learning to pick on the back porch.
